Fullmetal Alchemist - Equivalent Exchange (Vol. 3)

As the popular fantasy-adventure Fullmetal Alchemist continues, Edward Elrich uses his wits, as well as his professional skills, to give a corrupt military officer a well-deserved comeuppance. Based on the story "The Mining Town" in the first collection of Hiromu Arakawa's original manga, this adventure proves that "Be Thou for the People" isn't just a motto for the Elrich Brothers. The citizens of the played-out gold rush town of Xenotime refuse to accept Edward and Alphonse for who they are because two strangers have assumed their identities. Both pairs of brothers learn and teach valuable lessons as they defeat a murderous land baron who's after the Philosopher's Stone. Every episode of this winning series delivers what the viewers want: adventure, magic, slapstick, and Edward's inevitable rants about his diminutive stature. But Fullmetal Alchemist also delivers something that's become rare in American and Japanese animation: heart. (Rated TV PG: violence, minor risqué humor, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Fullmetal Alchemist - The Cost of Living (Vol. 5)

The tone of the popular fantasy-adventure Fullmetal Alchemist darkens as the Elric Brothers approach their desperately sought goal: the formula for the Philosopher's Stone. Winry and Grandmother Rockbell restore Edward's damaged auto mail limbs, and the new prostheses enable him to repair Alphonse's armor. The two brothers share a rare, carefree moment, sparring and roughhousing. Despite his mechanical limbs, Ed frolics unselfconsciously in a tank top and shorts--something it's hard to imagine an American animated character doing. When they return to the Central Library, Edward and Al learn that Dr. Marcoh's creation of an imperfect version of the Stone involved hideous cruelty that the Elrics could never countenance. Although Scar continues to stalk Edward, the brothers search for clues to a less savage, more successful process--and find themselves in murderous duels. Another winning installment in a series that enjoys both critical and commercial success. (Rated TV PG: violence, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Fullmetal Alchemist - The Fall of Ishbal (Vol. 4)

Edward and Alphonse Elric learn difficult lessons that affect their perceptions of themselves and their profession as Fullmetal Alchemist continues. They learn that the murderous vendetta Scar is conducting against State Alchemists grew out of the rebellion of Ishbal. They learn that Dr. Marcoh created an imperfect version of the Philosopher's Stone that the State military used to perpetrate a terrible massacre in Ishbal. When they are injured by Scar, Ed and Al learn to accept the aid of the gargantuan Alex Louis Armstrong. Ultimately, the brothers learn how necessary they are to each other. The serious moments are balanced against broad comedy: Al finds himself reduced to the status of baggage; Ed remains as hot-tempered as ever. While the Elric brothers struggle through their adventures, the mysterious figures of Lust, Envy, and Gluttony remain in the background, trying to control events. (Rated TV PG: violence, minor risqué humor, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 7 - Reunion on Yock Island

As Fullmetal Alchemist enters its second season, Ed and Al pursue the rumor that the inhabitants of Ishbal created a Philosopher's Stone without using alchemy. If the Elrics can learn how it was accomplished, they may be able to restore their bodies without harming anyone. After an unrewarding trip with Winrey, the Elric Brothers meet the one person they fear: Izumi, their old alchemy instructor. The filmmakers intercut the Brothers' present encounter with Izumi and flashbacks of their early training, suggesting the ongoing journey to mastery of their art. But episodes 27 and 28 suffer from a cultural gap. Izumi is modeled on a traditional Zen master: she gave Ed and Al the koan "All Is One, One Is All" to unravel to test their worthiness as pupils. But in place of the slap Zen masters sometimes administer, she beats the Elrics savagely and needlessly. To Americans, Izumi acts not like a wise disciplinarian, but a brutal sadist. While her training ultimately benefits Ed and Al, these episodes don't translate emotionally. (Rated TV PG: violence, grotesque imagery, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Fullmetal Alchemist - The Curse (Vol. 1) + Series Tin Box and Import CD

It's easy to understand why Fullmetal Alchemist has regularly topped viewer polls in Japan since its debut in 2003: the fantasy-adventure by director Mizushima Seiji (Generator Gawl) offers a satisfying blend of slapstick comedy, exciting adventure, and genuine warmth. Young Alphonse and Edward Elric delve into forbidden knowledge when they use alchemy to try to bring their mother back from the dead--and pay a terrible price under the principle of "equivalent trade." Al becomes a disembodied soul in a suit of armor; Ed loses an arm and a leg, but later receives mechanical prostheses. The brothers wander through a world that resembles late 19th century Europe, seeking the legendary Philosopher's Stone, which they believe can restore their bodies. Unlike American programs that juxtapose smart-aleck humor and heavy-handed sermonizing, Fullmetal Alchemist has real heart. Neither the comedy nor the action detract from the bond between the brothers that constitutes the emotional core of the series.
Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 6 - Captured Souls

The battle at Prison #5 continues in the sixth installment of Fullmetal Alchemist, as Edward and Alphonse Elric duel with suits of armor animated by the disembodied souls of murderers. In the deeper dungeons, the brothers learn that many of their adventures have been arranged by unseen puppeteers. Shou Tucker, the alchemist who created hideous chimeras in episode 7, has continued his research at the Prison, helping to draw Ed there. But Tucker is just a pawn for the homunculi, Lust, Envy, and Gluttony, who want the Philosopher's Stone for their own purposes. Edward is faced with the terrible choice of losing his brother or committing a hellish crime when the experiment is interrupted by Scar, the powerful and vengeful survivor of Ishbal. Although these conflicts are dramatic, they're eclipsed by the Elric brothers' inner struggles: Al has begun to doubt that he ever existed in human form, while Ed fears that Al hates him for delving into the forbidden knowledge that destroyed his body. Many series lose their energy and momentum as they near their midpoint; Fullmetal Alchemist shows no signs of slackening.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Hayao Miyazaki gained widespread attention in Japan for his complex ecological manga series, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1982), which he adapted for the screen two years later. One thousand years after a war devastated much of the Earth, humanity clings to existence at the fringes of a vast, polluted forest inhabited by monstrous insects. Only Nausicaä, the princess of the tiny realm of the Valley of the Wind, grasps the environmental significance of the forest. She sees beyond petty wars and national rivalries to the only viable future for the planet. In Nausicaä, Miyazaki began to explore elements he would develop more fully in his later films: daring, compassionate heroines; exciting flying sequences; colorful side characters; strong interpersonal relationships; and a call for an ecologically sustainable way of life. Nausicaä prefigures Sheeta in Castle in the Sky and Chihiro in Spirited Away, just as the rough and ready Asbel anticipates Pazu in Castle in the Sky and Ashitaka in Princess Mononoke. For years, Nausicaä was available in the United States only as the badly re-edited Warriors of the Wind. The new English dub from Disney presents the film in its entirety, with strong vocal performances by Uma Thurman, Patrick Stewart, Alison Lohman, and Edward James Olmos. (Rated PG: violence, frightening imagery) --Charles Solomon

Fullmetal Alchemist - Scarred Man of the East (Vol. 2)

Edward Elric passes the qualifying exams to become the youngest State Alchemist in history, and finds new friends, new challenges, and new dangers as the popular fantasy-adventure Fullmetal Alchemist continues. Ed doesn't get much time to savor his achievement: He and his brother Alphonse face an array of foes that includes a deranged alchemist and a serial killer. Ed also must face his new boss, Lt. Col. Roy Mustang, an unsmiling officer who may instill some patience and discipline in the young prodigy. The Elric brothers gain a friend in investigative officer Major Maes Hughes, whose warm nature juxtaposes Mustang's icy demeanor. Although these episodes offer plenty of intense action and broad comedy, what distinguishes Fullmetal Alchemist from other adventure series is its emotional honesty. When Ed narrowly escapes a violent death, he tearfully confesses his fear and loneliness, and his awareness of his all-too-human limitations--an admission few animated or live action heroes would make. (Rated TV PG: violence, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon
